Winter Wonderland

winterstylophone

What is Christmas without a SuperNES, a Stylophone, a Wurlitzer and an all girls 60s choir? Nothing, I tell you!
Since I’m breaking a few laws with this one I am not telling who are the singers nanana.
Also it is unclear where the sampling stops and where the true schnauzer-sauce is starting. I’m just telling you can leave out the ladies and still a full track is playing for your little bear-dance. (If I’m ever planning to release this legally I would have to, don’t you just love copyright law?)
This track is sort of a new years resolution. The resolution is: A whole lot more like this to come!

Anyhow, wishing you all a Happy Christmas!

(do with this track as you please. Blog about it, remix it, give it away to your worst enemies, or just do a little nerdy dance to it.)

8bit tributes

Picture 2

Completely downloadable for free! A bunch of chiptune lovers and musicians got together to make a Daft Punk tribute album called “Da Chip”.  Being critical over something so free is a bit sour, but let me say that this compilation has it’s ups and downs.  ”Around the World’ really isn’t grooving as hard as it’s original, the song ‘Voyager’ on the other hand is getting somewhere and proves that it can be done on 8bit equipment. The whole album is up for download on the Lemur blog

kindofbloop

And then there was ‘Kind of Bloop’

Andy Baio initiated on Kickstarter.com almost the total opposite . Kickstarter is a site dedicated to raise money for projects. In this case money was needed to pay royalties, for use of the material, downloads, and even pay the chiptune artists. People donating money are called ‘backers’ and would receive a physical CD on the 50th anniversary of Miles Davis’ “kind of blue’ album.  The goal was 2000 dollar. Withing the first 2 hours 800 dollars were raised. At the deadline $8.648 was in the can, payed by a total of 411 people. Meaning 411 are pressed.
You can’t ever buy this cd anymore. The only thing what’s left is a website with audioclips kindofbloop.com/ , and a download, but only after paying $5.= on August 20 at 12 ‘o clock PST…. (check the website).

From what I could tell by listening to the clips this really swings HARD! Every piano accompaniment , drumfill , and solo lines are meticulously recreated by 8bit squeare- and triangle waves. Recommended!

CdBaby.com

I just ordered ‘Joco Looks Back‘, a greatest hits album by internet phenomena Jonathan Coulton (and I suggest you do the same). Cd Baby replied at my order with the following e-mail. Needless to say I am still recovering. Talk about costumer service!

Your CD has been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with
sterilized contamination-free gloves and placed onto a satin pillow.

A team of 50 employees inspected your CD and polished it to make sure
it was in the best possible condition before mailing.

Our packing specialist from Japan lit a candle and a hush fell over
the crowd as he put your CD into the finest gold-lined box that money
can buy.

We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party
marched down the street to the post office where the entire town of
Portland waved "Bon Voyage!" to your package, on its way to you, in
our private CD Baby jet on this day, Wednesday, December 17th.

I hope you had a wonderful time shopping at CD Baby.  We sure did.
Your picture is on our wall as "Customer of the Year."  We're all
exhausted but can't wait for you to come back to CDBABY.COM!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Sigh...

CD tip

Klaus Harmony, and yes, those tiny letters spell out : ‘the mozart of porn’ .

cover_oeuvre1_lrg.jpg

His website is found here (don’t worry it’s safe for work).

Now my problem is I want to believe this. It looks so corny and genuine that it has to be real. It’s not. Klaus Harmony is a fictional character made up by Matthew Strachan, an English composer mainly working in the TV-industry. (who wants to be a millionaire’s soundtrack is from his hand). I think Matthew just needed an excuse to pump out the most corny tunes he could think of. The first three volumes of Klaus’ work are ready.

CD Tip

Sabbath in the Suburbs – by the Lounge Brigade.

A lounge-cocktail album with only Black Sabbath songs (the cover says it all).
From a rhumba version of ‘Paranoid’ to a swing-version of ‘Sabbath bloody Sabbath’.
Gold Jerry, gold!
I am a sucker for strange albums like this, and it warms my heart to see that there are still musicians out there who produce them. In this case it is produced by Joe Ferry. Now Who is Joe Ferry you ask? It is truly sickening to see his credentials.

1bit music

Perhaps the future of cd-sales?
Tristan Perich, a contemporary composer, produced a cd-case with a headphone output. tristanperich_onebitmusic_deviceonwhitecorrected_photobytristanperich_medium.jpg

According to his site the case consist of an electronic cirquit, pre-programmed with 14 songs. It plays 45 minutes of lo-fi electronic music.

To me this sounds like a fantastic idea. He is not selling a copy, he is selling an original! Impossible to sell through itunes or bittorent. Even the mp3′s on his site are incomparable to the original.

Too bad this only works for electronic-glitch-like music. To produce a big band album with trumpet-playing fleas is a whole different ballgame.
